Ready for a Kitchen Update?

Aren’t we average citizens always looking for a kitchen update, even when we haven’t YET decided the details? Unless you’ve just recently remodeled your kitchen, an update always seems promising, … always a good idea, if not just fun to ponder. Functionality and layout, design and detail, all have their moments in the zeitgeist, except for those classics that never go out of style, of course. As professionals in the tile business, along with our architect, builder and interior design partners, we’re equally engaged in this exercise of dreaming and execution. So heads up for what’s on trend in 2025 for kitchens, especially with an eye to our favorite world of TILE!

Slabs

Interest in full height backsplashes surged in 2024, and continue to be popular this year. These oversized pieces are being used on both floors and walls to create a seamless, polished look in kitchens, and we certainly get it. Their expansive size reduces grout lines, making kitchens appear larger while simplifying maintenance. We’re also seeing designs extend the countertop material up the wall to serve as the backsplash, creating a unified and modern appearance. Interested in a solid expression of your style vs. the busier tile looks? Consider stone slabs.

Bold Backsplashes

Sometimes a backsplash is just a backsplash. No need for a big show. But for those clients and dreamers who want to get metaphorical, the use of tiles with striking patterns and vibrant colors adds personality and flair. Whether through geometric designs or colorful mosaics, these tiles become focal points, if not conversation starters. We know our clients have their favorite brands, and there are several who knock the cover off the ball when it comes to design and mosaic tile. The good news? These exceptional brands are always creating and Horizon stocks their new styles.

Color Saturation

An equally bold trend involves using tiles in a saturated wash of vibrant hues that match or complement the overall color scheme of a kitchen. The effect is cohesive and immersive.

Classic Tile

You know the classics when you see them because they are timeless and recognizable. Small format mosaics are still stunning and are being updated (see Artistic Tile’s Windowpane Plaid and Motor City Circles below). And subway tiles are still popular whether you go with a tried-and-true running bond or prefer stacked, herringbone, crosshatch, or some other pattern.

Resilient Flooring

Woodlook flooring made its way to bathrooms for that spa look that continues to be popular, but it’s being incorporated throughout homes where the natural look and sustainability are prized. It only makes sense that woodlook tile would be perfect for kitchen floors. It’s easy to maintain, and the grain patterns are only getting more realistic in appearance.

Textured & 3D Tiles

Why limit your sensory experience to color? Textured tile is also a welcome addition to 2025 kitchens. The physical feel of textured tiles can make a space more inviting and engaging, especially for feature walls or backsplashes. These tiles not only add visual interest, they enhance the play of light and shadow, and can evoke a sense of elegance, warmth, or even a rustic charm, depending on the material and finish (think: handcrafted zellige tiles to fluted or embossed designs).
